Dental cavities are holes in the outer layers of a tooth – the enamel and the dentin. Cavities are caused by the accumulation of simple sugars in the mouth that bacteria feed off of. These bacteria produce acid plaque which softens both the enamel and the dentin. Saliva dissolves these softened layers, leaving holes in the tooth, called cavities.

Small cavities are sometimes painless, which is why it is important to get periodic dental cleanings and checkups. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends you visit the dentist at least twice a year. Some patients may require more frequent visits due to the condition of their teeth. Larger cavities can become very painful, collecting food and bacteria inside the tooth.

You can prevent cavities by:

-Eat a nutritionally-balanced diet - Reduce the amount of simple sugars you eat and drink. A good place to start is by eliminating all candy and soft drinks from your diet. A daily multivitamin will also ensure teeth are getting the proper nutrients to stay healthy and strong.

-Home dental-care - Daily brushing, flossing, and rinsing at home. Brushing will help eliminate bacteria from building up inside the mouth and on your teeth. Flossing will help reach those hard-to-get spots in between the teeth. You should brush your teeth at least twice a day. You should floss your teeth once a day. You should also rinse your mouth with water after meals to wash away food particles.

-Fluorides – Fluorides strengthen the teeth, particularly the layers prone to cavities. You can use either a fluoride rinse, or a fluoride gel.

-Sealants – Sealants are clear, resin coatings that are painted on top of the molars. Sealants are designed to fill grooves and crevices of the teeth – areas that can harbor bacteria and potentially lead to cavities. At Walnut Hill Dental, we encourage our patients to get sealants so they can protect themselves from cavities.

Many people fear going to the dentist. Typically this fear results from a traumatic experience in childhood – having a tooth pulled or a painful injection. With advancements in technology, going to the dentist doesn’t have to be painful or frightening!

Our staff understands such fears, and finds that these fears are usually eased when the patient knows more about the procedure they’re about to undergo. Our staff at Walnut Hill Dental wants you to be as relaxed and comfortable as possible during your visit. If you have questions, just ask. A member of our staff will be happy to assist you, and even hold your hand if needed!

We also offer what is called 'sedation dentistry' or 'sleep dentistry'. Sedation Dentistry is where a patient is put under general or mild anesthesia for the duration of their dental cleaning and exam. There are no needles in this procedure!

To inquire about sedation dentistry or to schedule an appointment, call us at (626)796-0313

A: At Walnut Hill, we subscribe to American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines. According to ADA guidelines, people should visit the dentist at least twice a year, preferably every 6 months. This ensures teeth are properly cleaned and examined for cavities. We also will check for oral cancer, tooth decay, tartar buildup, and gum disease. Some people may need to see the dentist more frequently, due to the condition of their teeth, or if they suffer from certain medical conditions that make them more susceptible to cavities.

To schedule an appointment for a dental cleaning and exam, call our offices at (626)796-0313. We offer convenient scheduling and accept most dental insurance carriers and credit cards for payment.

At Walnut Hill Dental, we offer two convenient methods of tooth whitening:

-In-Office Whitening – At Walnut Hill Dental, we use Zoom! whitening system. It takes between 30-60 minutes, depending on the condition and level of whiteness of your teeth. Gums are protected, and a bleaching solution is applied to your teeth. Then a special light is pointed at your teeth to enhance and accelerate the tooth whitening process. Results are noticeable immediately. This may require more than one procedure. Some patients report tooth sensitivity after. This will subside, in most cases, within 24 hours.

-At-Home Whitening – We also offer at-home customized tooth whitening. First the patient is fitted with custom dental trays. The patient will apply a special bleaching gel to trays and wear them 1-2 times daily or at bedtime. Results can take several weeks, depending on the level of staining with the teeth.

At Walnut Hill Dental, we offer both complete and partial dentures. Both are highly durable and can enhance your quality of life, your self esteem, and most of you’re your smile! Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, with partial dentures being used to fill in the gaps of missing teeth and prevent remaining teeth from shifting.

Getting dentures involves several visits to our offices. Impressions are made and measurements are taken to ensure proper fit. Then together the patient and one of our dentists will select the correct size, shape, and color of the dentures. During your final appointment, Dr. Tsibel or Dr. Abaro will adjust the dentures to ensure a proper and comfortable fit.

If you are currently wearing dentures and are not satisfied with their fit, we offer mini implants that in most cases can anchor your dentures down in just one visit!  Call us today to schedule a consultation - (626)796-0313. We offer a 10% discount for seniors 65 years and up.
